Why am I using PHP again?

Monday, June 21st, 2010

For four years of programming using PHP as my primary language,  it’s quite inevitable for me not to be bias on this language.  Well, aside from it is the language used on our project SolidDNS, on WordPress and on my website Cebu Directories.  It is really easy to adapt on this programming language and you’ll never get lost even if you only have the PHP Manual which is really really useful and helpful.

There was this free online tutorial book in PHP called ‘Practical PHP Programming‘ and one of it’s section that I find interesting is  ‘Selling PHP to your boss.’  These would be my clear-cut reasons why PHP is my superior choice for creating web applications.

How I got into the world of programming

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

When I was in college we were taught with different programming languages from Assembly, C/C++, Java, VB, ASP, C#.net and PHP.  Since our University was tied or probably had an agreement with Microsoft our major subjects in Computer Science were focused in using .NET.  We had no option but to embrace C#.NET and its excess codes (if you know what I mean).  I’ve been coding applications and developing systems for 2 years using C#.net (school requirements and thesis projects).  Coding had been quite tiring and I got bored and promised not to write a single code again after graduation but instead pursue doing graphic works.

Broken promises? I even ate my own words.

After college I was employed as a ‘Junior Software Developer’ in InfoWeapons Corp. My job description  ‘Programmer’, which means I’ll be writing codes again not C#.net but PHP.  As a ‘programmer’ it was quite shameful for failing not to answer most of the interview questions (on my defense I’m not an ‘omnitech’ guy, I am a ‘hands on’ guy).

Since fate has brought me to the coding world,  I couldn’t imagine how I’ve been writing codes for 4 years already.  I even developed an e-learning WebApp of which I sold to some of the local review centers here in Cebu.   I’ve been actively participating into the open-source community and it’s really fun to take part and contribute something of value to the local IT groups like DevCon, Cebu Drupal user Group and Google Technology User Group.

Whats the book all about?

The Smashing Book is a printed book about best practices in modern Web design. The book shares technical tips and best practices on coding, usability and optimization and explores how to create successful user interfaces and apply marketing principles to increase conversion rates. It also shows how to get the most out of typography, color and branding so that you end up with intuitive and effective Web designs.
